What is Wholesaling?

Wholesaling is the process of selling goods at a reduced rate to retail stores and businesses. Typically in the category of gifts and retail, goods are sold at a bulk rate of 50% of their retail value. Wholesaling offers the benefit of the vendor receiving money for their goods upfront, rather than waiting to receive compensation once their goods sell under consignment. Wholesaling to retail stores can increase the visibility of your brand and drive direct traffic to your own website if you have one! It can also be a good way to move inventory if you find yourself with extra.

What types of goods are suitable for wholesale?

Wholesale could be an excellent choice for your business or craft if you create goods that are easily reproducible. This would include stickers, prints, acrylic keychains, pins, screenprinted shirts, and embroidered products, to name a few. One-of-a-kind pieces and labor-intensive pieces are usually not compatible with wholesale, since the purchase price of 50% off retail is usually not equitable, considering the labor cost of the item. For these types of pieces, consigning the item would more likely be a better fit.

What do I need to do to wholesale?

So you've decided you want to wholesale your goods - what's the next step? Wholesalers may choose to apply directly to retail stores, or you can choose to upload your products to an online marketplace like Faire. 

To do it yourself, you'll need to create your own product linesheet. This includes your business's information as well as the following info for each product:

• Case size (# units per order)
• Wholesale price (typically 50% off MSRP, but may be different)
• MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price)
• Any variants
• Short description
